Vittoria Marisa Schiaparelli Berenson (New York, 1947) doesn't just believe in ghosts: she's lived with one. For three months, the model and actress shared a castle with a specter as if it were the most natural thing in the world. “I'm glad it was there; the poor thing kept me company. It was a very sad ghost, a disturbing presence that infected me with its mood and melancholy,” recalls the granddaughter of the legendary fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli about a supernatural experience that proved “perfect” for getting into the mood of the film. “ Stanley [Kubrick] was fully aware; not that there was a spirit, but that the place was quite depressing. It never stopped raining. I didn't film a single scene. I visited the set, cooked for the rest of the crew, and waited for the day to end. I went to bed every night thinking that the next day my moment would arrive, something that never did. I didn't really start working until we moved to England,” she reminisces.
